Robert's dad, Garland Madden was an avid amateur photographer - with a darkroom. As a child, Robert spent hours watching him experiment and develop prints. It wasn't until after his passing when Robert began going through boxes of his work that he realized how much his eye had been influenced by those quiet intimate times with his dad.
In his professional life, Robert found himself working behind artists, organizing and promoting their work. In the mid 1990's he founded and published an art magazine named PROVOCATEUR which showcased commercial photographer's personal work, everyone from emerging talent to artists at the pinnacle of their careers. The magazine garnered several "Awards of Excellence" and was influential in both the art photography and publishing worlds.
In 2005, friend and fellow photographer, Brian McCloskey gave Robert a Nikon Coolpix S1. He carried it everywhere and began to shoot what he saw. The more he photographed, the more was revealed to him, and the more intrigued he became with the intimacy of the world around him. His first two shows produced invaluable feedback. Robert had the opportunity to hear how his photographs were received and witness the affect the work had on people. He had found the way to flow his joy.
Robert was sought out for a solo exhibition with Sundance Cinemas Gallery. He was featured in London's PROWL Magazine with a 3 page spread, while getting placement in Artists to Watch in both Standard Design Magazine and Studio Vox. He also has work in private collections in Provincetown, Dallas, New York, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
